Ice Bear is First.
Honestly, the Shadow changes in my opinion can be summarized in one word: lazy- Mind Sear has proven to be a very weak AoE spell for Shadowpriests. It never worked well with the multi-dotting niche, and in it's most potent form (@ 90% of MF damage), was probably still the weakest AoE spell in the game. Further, it's whole mechanic is clashing with multi-dotting and void bolt + mind blast. You could drop those spells completely as early as 4 targets (insanity from VB and MB just do not matter), especially since the low duration DoTs are that much of an annoyance. (Mind Sear having a DoT extension effect could make it work together with multi-dotting)- Mastery has been changed and practically all of the casted Shadow abilities have been added. The exclusion are: Shadowy Apparitions, Shadowfiend, and the talent spells. The mastery tooltip is simply put hideous for a class that only deals shadow damage, it could just as well be reduced to "increase shadow damage by x%" for convenience sake. This would also solve certain talents getting exceedingly weaker the more mastery you have (SW:D and Shadow Crash). This obviously won't happen, because it's just that hideous: A class that only deals shadow damage having a mastery that increases Shadow damage. - With cooldowns on the GCD change, Power Infusion and StM are utterly crushed. You can no longer use them in Voidform without dropping Voidform. Brilliance at it's best.- Shadow surviveability as mentioned is abyssmal. PW:S has been nerfed for the god knows-th time because of Disc priests, Vampiric Touch healing has been reduced to 30% of damage dealt, while Vampiric Touch damage has been nerfed by about 50%, that's a total of 70% less healing through VT. - I don't really know why Void Torrent was chosen to keep as an artifact spell. It was good in a world where a 1 minute cycle and voidform stacks mattered. It's just poor in the current form, pittyful single-target damage that roots you, and voidform stacks that do not matter. Call to the Void would make a much more fun trait to keep around, especially if they also generate insanity.Edit for Talents:T15: FotM is exclusively single-target, and gets worse in any multi-target scenario. SI's primary issues have not been fixed (the GCD cost and 1 charge Mind Blast), but it was made single-target. Shadow Word: Void is likely to go choice, at is works the best in multi-target scenarios, while also preventing the MB/VB CD clashes in Voidform.T45: Dark Void is highly situational, and as said, the ring has shown it very rarely works. Misery is only a real dps gain in multi-target cases, while Twist of Fate just works anywhere. I'd suggest giving Dark Void and Misery some actual tuneable DPS effect (e.g. Dark Void increases Void Eruption damage, and Misery gives VT an initial tick)T75: According to the design blog post, a sustain vs. AoE vs. execute tier is poor design. Why does it even exist?T90: LI is pointless with Voidform ending at 10% haste, Mindbender will likely be the only option, as Power Infusion isn't all that powerfull with the greatly reduced haste and the GCD change.T100: All talents here are currenty very weak. Most useful is Legacy, as it makes the 2.5 sec cast Void eruption actually castable. Void Torrent is a very weak single-target spell, and Surrender is one minute of movement, hardly a DPS gain (pretty much only if you'd have to move a lot during the 1 min)
I hope they have an Azerite Trait or make a talent to return Call to the Void to Shadow Priests. Without summoning tentacles, it feels like the fantasy of using eldritch abomination magic is lacking. Or y'know, they just make it a passive effect for 110.
Now this is quite a lot voices. I like seeing so many takes on all three specs. I wasn't expecting more than two people contributing to each spec; pleasantly surprised as I continued scrolling to see an additional name.imo, Shadow's redesign in Legion was one of the most disappointing spec redesigns ever done (rivaling the awfulness of Affliction's redesign for MoP), and has been not only unfun to play, but too weak in too many situations. It looks like it's just going to continue being unenjoyable unless they continue making significant changes. Also a 14 second duration on SW:P, let alone any DoT is horrific. I really do not understand why the devs are so deadset on having us recast DoTs as much as possible. It's not enjoyable at all.
Man... This is a deep sigh i'm letting out.I don't play that much nowadays, just dipping in for a few months every now and then, reading about these changes to shadow hurts me.When i began Legion i of course wanted to get back to doing the shadow things. Well. Right now my main is a windwalker monk which kinda summarizes how much i loved the spec that i'd mained since WoTLK. Guess in a way i found it more fun to punch stuff than to roll with said punches. At this point in time i don't think Shadow has a class-identity that Blizzard is supporting/working towards. Legion was a good start, but knaifu and co. for a sometimes-player felt a bit uncomfortably temporary... Removing Death into a talent, decreasing dots and survivability... It's the usual "We dont know what to do, so we're doing all the wrong things"-juggling act that happens far too often for Spriests.Hopefully they just havent rolled up their sleeves yet and will begin to salvage this pile of junk into a somewhat functioning spec before release. I miss my smug belf.
Shadowpriest here:Some reviewers tell that it 'MIGHT" be good changes for raiding and mythic+, but AFAIK the max level on alpha is capped at 103 and no one actually tested 110 level SP, whether there might be additional passives or significant change in gear dependent mechanics. Can't say that i'm entirely negative or positive with the changes, but i'd like to know all of them if possible. And also opinion of an epic geared 110 SPriest if there is one, since mechanics can significantly change with gear - forcing us to choose more efficient talents over convenient ones like Misery.
I am playing Spriest since WotLK. This spec has never been balanced correctly since then.Just copy/paste what they had in Wrath and leave it at that since Devs nowadays give the impression they are clueless as to what to do with it: is this supposed to be like affli, is it supposed to be like balance, they added this Demonology-like spell called Voidform they don't know what to do with (center playstyle around it, make it less relevant...).SPriest nowadays looks like the result of clueless design, the feeling I get is the Devs are just throwing stuff out there and hope it fits somehow.
Preface: I do not have the BfA alpha. For shadow priests in Legion, the problem is/was design. If you're going to have a ramp up class...they actually need to have high damage when they've ramped up. I think it's possible that the ramp was too high and our damage in Legion was too lackluster to compensate for that. But this isn't the only issue Shadow has had.I think Shadow in its current iteration is too one-dimensional and that is its fundamental problem. Throw one little monkey wrench at us and we have no way to recover from it. (Which is particularly compounded in pvp but idk how the cc nerfs for the BfA alpha affects that.) Almost every enemy "mechanic" in the game is horrible and feels horrible for a shadow priest to deal with. Movement? Difficult but learnable. Mob phases? Well, we've just missed out on all of the work we did ramping up our damage potential now or we need to have a group consistent enough for this not to be an issue (at which point a shadow priest isn't necessary anyway.) Interrupts? Makes us fall out of void form, our "iconic ability" faster than hammer pants fell out of style. Having to use damage mitigation? Power Word: Shield really doesn't do enough, particularly on higher level mythics, and if you disperse you're silenced for the duration. Even the best Life Grips could feel disappointing if it causes us to fall out of a Void Form early and I don't think that's a design choice Blizzard really wants players to experience. We have no mobility, we have no burst, we have poor AoE, we have poor CC, we have poor healing, we have lackluster survivability, and we don't even have support skills. How much ramping damage does it take to compensate for all of that? Shadow priests need tools to either mitigate or overcome these specific challenges, particularly for dungeons and pvp where we have underperformed in Legion. There needs to be a desirable reason to have a spriest in a group and I'm not sure Blizzard is heading in that direction just yet.
They should mess with classes as little as possible.I've had main priest since Vanilla to Cataclysm. Then holy spec was changed to chakra nonsense that completely changed how class behaved and I hated it. Now in Legion they changed all specs again and I don't even recognize my formerly favorite class. Its completely different. And I hate it because I had to abandon priest character that had all reputations, transmogs and stuff that I care about.Dear developers, Stop! Messing! With! Classes!
I've mained Mistweaver the last couple of years, but wanted to play Shadow, and I just can't cope with Holy. It feels terrible to play! I hate the Holy Word mechanic.
It feels to me that Shadow Priest is shifting towards more of a direct damage spec. The problem is that the spec needs to be redone accordingly. As of now there is no benefits being in voidform appart from casting void eruption/bolt. but voidform doesn't even matter that much since we lose most of all the perks from the artifact weapon that scale with stacks and the nerf to voidform hurts a &*!@load. Also this alpha build hints a return of Mind Spike in the Fortress of the mind talent, that's not being implemented as a baseline spell nor talent yet. Which leads me to believe that the talent tree is not done yet (As it should be at this stage). Moreover it's easy to compare the state of alpha now and live Spriest. On live we have our full weapon with all the perks and tier set/legendaries, whereas you only have a low level/small geared character with just the talents on the alpha build. We have yet to observe what perks the Heart of Azeroth will bring and what potential legendary system will be introduced. I also think that some of our power might be shifted in trinkets which would make for the loss of tier sets and some arctifact weapon traits/ potential legos loss.I say we wait another 1&1/2 or 2 months, so that we have more data to compare with to start conjecturing the state of the spec. That goes for Disc too, although the way they seem to move the spec towards looks promising.
I see what they are trying to do with Disc now. They want Disc to have two styles of healing, the first is Atonement healing which is better in raids, and the new style they are implementing with these changes, is the normal healing for dungeons.
Sounds like rather than rewarding playing Shadow well, it's simply having the ceiling lowered that no matter how well you play, you're going to be pretty much right where the less skilled players are. However, I do wonder if the opinions above are simply talking in a vacuum, or if other classes/specs are similarly affected. For all the perceived negatives coming to Shadow in BfA, perhaps it's not just us having to deal with it?
I do hope someone at Blizzard is listening to some of these folks. I'm really dreading the lack of attention to Holy's damage mitigation and external situation. Until these posters mentioned it, I had totally forgotten we were going to be losing the double Guardian Spirit, too. At least with that, I didn't feel so selfish having to constantly use Guardian Spirit on myself as a psuedo-defensive. Not to mention the loss of the cloak is going to make our squishiness even more apparent.I guess we're going to be having to use trinkets as a substitute for actual defensives and external cooldowns again. Hopefully there are some nice ones coming.
I really keep to myself 90% of the time, but as someone who only plays shadow I feel like I should at least throw my opinion out there. When Legion came out, shadow went from my favorite spec to the best spec. That immediately worried me because I knew i'd see a nerf sooner or later (RIP STM), but I was having a great time going into my own little world at ~30% each boss fight. Nighthold was fun, some fights were really great for shadow (namely Botanist) and some were pretty &*!@ (looking at you Krosus). Regardless, shadow was still fun but this was around the time two things I hate about the current shadow started to become a thing:
Wheres the write up on the state of Hunters? Might want to get on that. BM is a total fail in Alpha, SV should actually be the BM spec. They need a light shed on them ASAP, before it is to late. Unless blizz really is trying to get rid of most hunters? Might want to get on that.
I miss my damn chakras that projected on to the ground with my holy priest.
How to fix shadow 1011. Make voidform a burst ability2. Make insanity a spendable recourse with a passive out of combat regeneration to 30-50/100 3. Put void eruption and void bolt in the standard shadowform rotation (1 aoe and 1 st, kinda like rets) but with a shared CD, both extending dot's and costs insanity to cast4. The return of a long lost friend called cascade rather than shadow crash5. The return of yet another long lost friend called devouring plague, also costs insanity to cast, and it heals the caster for 10%+ health6. PW:s reworked in to SW:s (Shadow word: shield) shielding the caster for x amount based on insanity used7. We all know how bad dispersion is, only 60% damage reduction (now without heal), let us cast while in it8. Return spectral guise (ohh my how I miss that)9. A hefty knock back that results in a 3 sec unbreakable root or a black hole with a really strong pull, so strong in fact that charge, leap, pounce, dash/sprint, etc, won't work (For those of you who know that pain of being a shadow priest in arenas, in these extremely melee favored times)10. Mindflay can be channeled while running!11. Shadowfiend/mindbender made stronger so they are worthy of the title CD12. Let vampiric embrace heal 5 low health party/raid members, not just a random party/raid member that doesn't need it OR let it only heal the caster (the pure RNG have killed it's usefulness)13: Isn't it long over due that we get a faceless/forgotten (permanent pet maybe?)?14. Shadowy apparitions and it's accompanying talent auspicious spirits are pretty much useless they are low damage and slightly higher low damage, the only reason they are used in legion is due to the high amount that spawns that increases that duration of voidform, so just buff them, ok? or just remove them and add their small amount of damage to some other ability, that is not mindflay (unless idea 10. happens, then I'd be alright with it)15. Buff the speed bonus of body and soulNow I also have one general class idea16. Shackle undead, rename that to shackle, thus making it usable on humanoids and undeadIf any of these ideas get through, a lot of talents will be gone, giving room for some potentially better talents, in our quest to be more viable in both m+ and raidsAnd just a small side note, surrender to madness is still very likely to kill you, whith the fact that the current alpha version deals 90% maximum health in damage, so if you're at 90% health or below you're dead, and in raid encounters where there is a lot of raid wide damage going on I'd say you're dead at 91-95% health as well, unless your kind neighborhood paladin is quick enough to throw a lay on hands your way, just after you exit voidform
I won't lie- as a main Disc/Shadow priest, I feel like we get a lot of flack and the short end of the update stick. I was disappointed when they replaced Purge the Wicked back to Shadow Word: Pain.. it just felt....like one step forward and two backwards? If that makes sense. Not to mention drops for our gear are so hard to get it might as well be something we pay for off the Blizz shop. I've been trying to upgrade my ilvl for a while and the only way I've been able to has been rare legendary drops (I've gotten at least three in the last year alone) or buying from the Ethereal on the Vindicaar.
