Tried today, several realm hops, cage is still bugged. Super sad, I've been saying since SL dropped that I wanted one of these guys as a pet. :(

still bugged but after about 50 hops i could open one on a server i have never heard of before. good luck all
Still bugged and people know it, pet is currently on my AH for 100K.
Got it today by using the "old" key I got from the last quest. Instead of killing the last mob I went to the cage and was able to open it.
