Don't get near the bat handler in the horde camp. She will attack from a huge distance without any provocation and will send her level ? bats to utterly destroy you in one shot.

Not sure if anyone else has encountered this, but I found the Deathguards to be completely phased out while I was in Andorhal and this quest was available. I could spot a few on the outskirts while I wasn't in the area limits, but as soon as I approached them, they vanished.

I could do the sister quest, with no issues.

Edit: It seems that some adds do appear in the Andorhal area, but they are either on a very long respawn time, or fade in and out seemingly randomly. I finally finished the quest, took me about 35 minutes to get them all though.

Edit: As of 4.2, reports say this is now working normally.

The alliance defenders start fighting eachother. Must be a bug and maybe the reason so few mobs spawn. Uploading screenshot of it.

Edit. Problem is actually that the defenders kill the deathguards very fast. If they dps them under 50% u wont get credit.
This quest is broken. Im making a GM ticket, hopefully they repair it before 4.1

Judging by the Captain to Deathguard ratio, Andorhal might be a bit too generous on the promotions.

There are two ways to be able to finish this quest and get around the broken phasing.

1) If you are melee, there are 3 spawn points within Andorhal. All close to each other. Just be sure to kill them quickly or the npc's fighting them will make it so you wont get kill credit.

2) If you have a pet, you can stand at the edge of the Andorhal zone (but still considered in West PL.) and send your pet in after the Deathguards and bring the pet back close enough for you to attack. There are about 4 possible that are in view distance. Camp the 3 inside Andorhal as well, of course.

This worked for me. I rode around the borders of Andorhal and spammed this macro:
/tar Andorhal Deathguard
If I had a target, I sent in my pet and then had him kite it back to me so I got the kill.

Still consumes a lot of time tho...

And 3 defenders fighting each other. Remind me of Alliance on my server...

Took me half hour to finish this quest. I found 2 spawn points on the north road that leads out of the city, third one little bit to the east in the remains of one building. Can't find 4th spawn spot that others mention.

This quest appears to have been fixed in the maintenance on 4/12/2011.

I had picked up the quest this weekend and experienced the problems with phasing on the Deathguards - only 4 spawns in the entire area, very quickly killed by the Alliance guards - and gave up after about 30 minutes netted me only 5 guards.

I went back today to see if I could finish it off, and Andorhal - while not exactly swarming with Deathguards - had a respectable number, who were not dying immediately to the guards.

I was able to complete the quest in about 5 minutes of clearing out the city, which opens up further quests in this chain.

Listen to where the sound is coming from and you'll soon discover the few working spawn places

Also ignore all the "huh" sounds from the guards, those are buggy spawns, what you want to listen for is swords hitting each other.

The time of typing this, theres no spawn points. At all. I looked, waited, listened, saw 0 guards at all. If there is spawns, I'm not seeing them and the super guards we have are killing them.

I did this quest as a Death Knight. When I found a deathguard, I noticed that when I got too close to it, it disappeared. I backed up a little bit, and it reappeared again but too far away to cast anything at it. I headed for it again, it disappeared and I cast death and decay right at the spot where it disappeared. When I backed up the deathguard reappeared, the death and decay killed it and got I got the kill credit. If you plan to just stay in the same spot and wait for it to respawn, make sure you stand back, it will not appear if you are too close. Takes about 5 minutes for it to respawn.

If you have a pet you can control, you can stand on the outskirts and see the mobs. Send the pet into attack then hit passive and the mob will follow the pet to you. Make sure you hit it at least once. If your pet kills it you will not get credit for the kill.

Still bugged as of 3/5/2011, however, this quest seems to only bug for some characters or some accounts, as I did it on my mage on my second account with no issues. I can't say how it works out on same account, different characters.

Upon finding the bug I submitted a ticket about it and the representative left me a note saying they aren't aware of the issue and are going to investigate. I'm gonna pretend Santa exists and keep my fingers crossed.

Anyway, as a level 85 Hunter, my strategy to get the guards was simple dive-bombing. Mount up, fly until your zone changes to "Western Plaguelands", keep an eye out for the guards and as soon as you spot one dive-bomb them while spamming some ranged ability that will one shot them.

It takes a looong time.

i found the bug. it makes the Deathguards phase out when your in Andorhal. i found eight spawn points, but only two of them are workable. the first one is at 48.0, 71.1, but you have to stand on the bridge where your mini-map says Sorrow Hill. the second one is at 41.4, 65.2, but you need to stand where your mini-map says Western Plaguelands. i'm playing a priest, so using an instant damage spell like Shadow Word: Pain and Devouring Plague make it so the Deathguard won't phase out and after you kill it, some of them are allowed to be looted. i hope this helps anyone who is having trouble with this quest.

Just did this as Alliance. I took some of the above posters advice and went to the bridge that leads over from Sorrow Hill. I saw one Deathguard phase in and as I ran towards him I managed to fire a fel flame at him(I'm 85 so fel flame is an easy one hit instant kill move) he began phasing out but my fel flame killed him, after that all the other Deathguards phased in without any more issues getting in the way and I completed the quest in a couple of minutes.

If you use some type of ground effect or trap where they pat you can aggro them to come closer. Just watch the path and lay it even if deathguard phases out. Ie Ring of frost if mage

So the first char I did this on, contacted a GM, who admitted it was dodgey and completed the quest for me.

The second time it happened (months after this+I reported it) the GM told me there was no bug you just have to wait for the spawns.

So have fun waiting hours for this quest, really poor service from that GM I hope they dont tell everyone this.

Still seems to be bugged but found an easy way for Shaman to complete. Phase out of Andorhal and run around the edge while phased out pressing your macro (/tar Andorhal Deathguard. When you find a Deathguard remember where on the map the mob was. Go back into Andorhal drop some totems and run out to unphase and the totems will aggro the mob and boom there is your kill.

I am not a hunter and dont have good ranged...im a warrior tank. So the only way ive found to get this to work is to use both bridges that head into the city as above posters have said. Get on my fastest mount.....back up accross the bridge so that a deathguard becomes visable....then i run towards him spamming heroic throw and 1/2 of the time i can kill him before he phases back out / dissappears. Then i do the same on the other bridge. The 2 bridges are the only spots i seem to be able to do this...so it took forever to get all 15 kills.

What i did was to get the 2 kills like i explained.....then log out on the bridge...and logged in a different toon and worked on some leveling / crafting for 5-10 minutes (while waiting for the slow respawn) then log back in and get 2 more kills....rinse and repeat.. Hope this helps....this quest was VERY frustrating. Especially bcas i was 44 / 45 or whatever for western plaguelands and WP was the ABSOLUTE last zone i needed for Eastern Kingdoms Loremaster Achievment lol.

As a level 85 paladin with 300 riding, I found that that the following strategy wasn't too bad: spam a "/target andorhal death" macro while flying around the border of Andorhal (but not actually in the zone), then once you find one that's pretty close, rush in from the air and try to land as soon as judgment (talented with improved judgment to make the range way longer) is castable. I had to wait for them to respawn once, but when I started the quest there were two visible ones already fighting inside one of the houses, so it might take two respawns without that.

Still bugged. I'm sorry, but running around looking for 15 mobs and finding only 2 in 30 minutes is not working as intended. With all the Alliance npcs standing around, it's clear that the city is intended to be full of mobs at this time, not with mobs that are out of phase on long respawn timers. If the GMs are saying "just wait it out", they must think we're whining and not reporting a legitimate problem; this is a legitimate problem.

Just an interesting note if your a lock and are stuck on this quest, if your standing outside andorhal and cast eye of kilrogg and then take the eye into andorhal it shows ardorhal in the phase all the deathguards are in. I used this to help me find where deathguards were positioned near the edge of andorhal and then pulled them with my pet while standing outside the city.

This quest is terrible. Been standing around in Andorhal for a very long time and have managed to kill on 2 Deathguards. You get to close and they phase out. Nearly impossible to get this done. I've only found one spawn point and that is near the bridge to Sorrow Hill.

Best spot i have found as a rogue to deal with this phasing debacle is on a hill on the northwest side of Andorhal. facing into the city, but still in the wpl zone, you will see a tower to your left, and the buildings under construction right next to all the other alliance buildings to your right. one mob spawns directly in front of you here, every 3-5 minutes, within throwing weapon range.

48, 72 (sorrow hill bridge) and 41, 65 (just above the A in Andorhal on the map) are the best spawn points to reach at range. all others were too far away to hit. make sure you are in the 'western plaguelands' zone and not in andorhal or they will phase out.

I ran between this 2 spawn points to complete the quest, respawn time on each was around 5 minutes

If you have a high level friend, they can invite you to a group and kill Deathguards for you. It appears that it doesn't matter if said friend has done the quest, they still see a version of Andorhal with many guards.

Not sure if someone who hasn't done the quest can help you this way, but it might be worth a try.

44/45 of my WPL Quests. Can't find any more quests to do, pfft. This is not going to be fun to do as a Warr.

Have found that the trick that Stegotgame said works well - Sorrow Hill Bridge, find a mob, mount up, run like hell, Heroic Throw - works really well.

I found 41,65 to be the best spot. You can only reach one mob from this location, but with a 3-5 minute respawn time, the quest should take 30-45 mins if you have the patience. Range is required as you must remain in the "Western Plaguelands" area. If you cross into Andorhal the mobs will phase out.

Hopefully Blizz recognizes this and fixes it in an upcoming patch.

use Consecration. glyph can help, but not necessary.
there are about 5-6 spots, where you can stand, map says Western Plaguelands / Sorrow bridge / etc., and you can see close enough the mobs.
you run in, place consecration, then run out, until you see your zone changed.
stop there, the mob will aggro you, and you will be in range of his spot, so if you dont move further its just run to you, and you can kill.

this way took me about 6-7 minutes :)

A good place for Alliance to catch these is at 41, 64. There is an Andorhal Deathguard who appears within range here. There is another just a little further in, but out of reach of my spells.

As a shaman, you can run into where the guard further in was, drop a non-damaging totem, and run back out to the coords above. The guard will reappear, kill the totem and then come towards you, putting it within range to kill it.

went back to this quest today after spending 2 hours trying to complete this quest yesterday and only managing to get one kill. Today i got 12 kills with no phasing issues, i thought i was going to be able to complete it but I wasnt because although the NPC's were there there was no re-spawn even after rebooting / moving to other zone and returning etc etc. did a ticket in game and was told it was possible to complete..........maybe but its still bugged and NEEDS FIXING!

I was just working through the Western Plaguelands on my lowbie mage and I found this phase bug is still an issue (date is....5/28/2011). I saw that several people here suggested running around the outskirts of Andorhal to stay out of the phase and kill Deathguards that way.

I did that and figured I'd just compile a small list of places where I was able to stay outside of the phase and target Deathguards with a "/tar Andorhal Deathguard" macro, and how many Deathguards I could find from there.

-Bridge from Sorrow Hill. 1 Deathguard
-Small dock on the south side of the town, just east of the road in from Chillwind Camp. 2 Deathguards
-Road from Chillwind Camp. 1 Deathguard
-Northwest of the town, there's a small break in the hills by an unfinished building that looks vaguely like a chruch. 2 Deathguards
-North side of the town, standing by the hills that border the Forsaken hub in the town. 1 Deathguard
-Northeast of the town, your zone will actually say "The Writhing Haunt" instead of "Western Plaguelands" and you should see farmland. 1 Deathguard

I just circled around the town, hitting up these same spots and using my Water Elemental to grab their attention and pull them into range of my spells. They had usually respawned in these spots by the time I had circled back around. Hope this helps someone!

As a druid I found the bridge to Sorrow Hill the ONLY place I could 'see' and actually hit with my moonfire spell. I would have to draw them outside of Andorhal if I wanted to loot them after I killed them. If I didn't care, I could kill them inside of Andorhal and get credit, just no loot.

I managed to find a whopping four by sniping them with my hunter from the coordinates given above, then gave up. I'm hoping they fix this soon as its anything but fun to have to wait 5-10 minutes between each mob's spawn in those 2 locations. :[

Now, if only they hadn't removed Eyes of the Beast from hunters... /sigh.

I was able to complete this quest on my 39 warrior using my handy dandy 우당탕 쿠당탕 자동차 조종기!
I would stand on the edge of the zone directly adjacent to Andorhal and send my little spybot into the zone to grab aggro of a normally phased Andorhal Deathguard.
Then I would run my robot back to me and spam Heroic Throw so as soon as he died I would be in combat with the deathguard. Then it is just kill, rinse and repeat. Still was a major pain to finish though.

As a warlock with ~70 yard range to send pets and a 40 yard range firebolt from my faithful imp Yazgup, I could harvest about 6 spawns by running around the outskirts of Andorhal. I highly recommend playing a movie or something while you do this, because even with my insane range, it took a gigantic time slot.

Oh, and apparently if you phase in and out of the southwest gate about 10 times, it kills Lurid. So watch out for that.

So after a few hours of camping a single spawn point on my lowbie mage, which is fire because I absolutely hate frost. I've hated frost since classic, and I've always leveled as fire. Anyways, I send in a ticket, about the bug. GM contacts me over night while I was sleeping and I apparently have a 3 hour ban for misusing the ticket system.

Bug: Phasing Issue
Problem: I am stuck on this quest due to the Andorhal Deathguards being stuck in a seperate phase of andorhal than me. It is near impossible for me to complete the quest. Skirting the edges of Andorhal is starting to get annoying, and camping certain spawn points is as painful as camping Time Lost Proto-drake. Please unstuck Andorhal Deathguards so I can get on my way and out of this buggy zone.

Phase Issue Work around. Look up for the locations.
If you stand in WPL and look into androhol you can see them and pull them to you. this is easiest with pet class. Trashen crashin robot can pull too.

It's true this quest is quite bugged, however I found that I could go around the edge of Andorhal and not be in the zone that's phased, so I could still see a lot of Deathguards around the edge, this helped me finish this quest with relative ease despite being stuck at the beginning. Hope this helps.

as of Sun 05/06/11 still bugged, yesterday I did open two tickets and got answer at second, GM says that quest is obviously bugged, and that they are on their work to fix it soon, GM was very kind, but seeing that this problem has over 2 months old and survived a patch, I don't expect that the issue get fixed really soon

The quest is massively buggy, but I found a quicker way to do it than taking a whole hour. When entering Andorhal from the south, before entering the city take a right and jump into the water, there is a dock a short way in. Stand on it, while in the "Western Plaguelands" side. Shoot them, send a pet after them, throw a weapon at them, something with some range to pull them to you. There is a deathguard straight ahead on the road and another that's a little harder to see, but he's to your right. You'll see his blurry name between the barn directly in front of you and a house in the distance and to the right. I killed these two everytime they respawned (which was about 3-5minutes after I killed them) and it only took me about 20minutes to complete.

(Note: If you back up the end of the dock, and kill them you will be able to loot them because they are also now in the Western Plaguelands, if their body falls in Andorhal you can't loot them because their body will disappear when you enter the city.)

There's a lotta nice tips here for completing this quest. However, many aren't very melee- or no-pet- friendly. As a ret paladin, this quest is taking me quite a while. I managed to catch the two fighting in town, but that was 20mins ago and none have respawned in that area.

The only two "strategies" that worked for me so far have been the spawn at the northwestern part (grab it with spec'd range on judgement or taunt) and the southeastern bridge (same strat).

So very frustrating, and it's a shame that you can't continue the quest chain without doing this one. It sucks that Blizzard has not addressed this, even after a patch, maintenance, and knowing it's been an issue for many months now.

As an 85 warlock going back through for achievements. I Ran around the boarders of Andorhal, if you go inside the deathguards you need will disappear. make a macro for /tar Andorhal Deathguard, use your voidwalker to taunt your targets and bring them to you. It still may take a while but the voidwalker is a god send.

If you are a shaman and the mob is too far away, put a totem close to the location of the mob and then go outside of the zone. The mob will attack the totem and then run to you.

Took me about 30 mins to do this with my frost mage, once I'd found the places to stand and worked around the phasing bug (that's what it is, I checked with a GM). There's 4 good places to get the deathguards:

42.12,63.40
41.13,64.81
50.07,64.67
and
The bridge across to Sorrow Hill

I went to each of these points in turn, basically working in a clockwise direction around the outskirts (following the hills). The point nearest the quest giver spawns 2 guards within reach, the others have 1 each.

I targeted a guard, then set my elemental on passive and clicked its frost bolt spell. Off it goes, hits the guard and makes its way back to me. Kill the guard outside Andorhal zone and it's lootable.

(This method also works with hunters, warlocks and unholy DKs if they want it for the Loremaster achi. )

If you work clockwise to each point, then back to the start you should be able to complete the quest in 3 passes.

I just finished this quest on my paladin. And the phasing is still broken (on 6/11/2011).

Thankfully I ran into a hunter who was also doing the quest. What worked for us was to skirt the edge of Andorhal and I used a macro with the command: "/tar Andorhal Deathguard" (no quotes) as we rode around to get the target for the hunter to send her pet in after it. The pet had a long range, but occasionally I could stand in a spot and use one of my engineering grenades to pull. It took us three or four rounds, but we managed to get the quest done this way.

Thought I'd share this strategy for those who couldn't get it finished.

Experienced the phasing bug. As a pally, what I did was to ride around the border of Andorhal, making sure I wasn't in the zone "andorhal" (i.e in Western Plaguelands or Sorrow Hill). Generally, if I could spot a Deathguard, I could attack it. I would ride towards the spot where it disappeared, cast Consecration, and quickly remount and dash back into Western Plaguelands/Sorrow Hill before consecration expired.. The deathguard would reappear and would be aggroed. Helps a lot to have journeyman riding.

Regarding your issue - as you noticed the quest phasing is indeed bugged at the moment. Our developers are working on a fix for it. For now, I've heard reports that if you stand on the bridge you can usually grab 1-2 as they come into your phase.

So its an known issue and theyr working on it. Only way to do it while bugged it so stand by one of those coords mentioned earlier.

Seem to be bugged from time to time, quest wasnt bugged when I did it with my worgen.

I think I figured it out. the pairs of soldiers seem to spawn together, so for some reason they won't re-spawn until both soldiers are killed. I too was running around a bunch of bored alliance soldiers, until a horde came through and killed all of them. Then they re-spawned with their horde counterparts and I was able to complete the quest. Sorry to the poor schmuck who came after me, though. :P

So log into a handy horde death knight, run over to andorhal, and hook up your fellow alliance.

If you have shaman somewhere around things can get pretty easy. Stay phased out and be ready to pull with your ranged ability. Shaman need to plant searing totem somewhere between you and Deathguard and quickly phase out to you. Once Deathguard finishes off totem he will run to shaman, you can pull and both of you gets credit for kill.
Of course if you're a shaman you can solo it but that is not the point here.
Point is practical application of shamans in everyday Andorhal life.

ok i did this as a warrior and it was annoying but i found 3 spots i could aggro them.... on the 2 bridges and at 41.2/ 64.7 at the bridges if u get on ur mount target them and run in and use taunt if u r fast enough it will aggro them but they vanish so u gotta run back out so they show up again and they should still be aggroed the other 1 at 41.2/ 64.7 is close enough all u gotta do is shoot him or use heroic throw

Yeah it worked on my hunter no problem and then i got on today all of it spawned last night and the day before there was nothing Ive been doing this quest for like 3 days they either de bugged it or i got lucky

Was able to complete this quest in about 10 minutes as a ret pally mostly using the 4 or 5 spots mentioned earlier above. I just got aboard a ground mount at the edge of the area (make sure minimap says "Western Plaguelands"), targeted the closest mob and then rode at him as fast as possible spamming Judgement. Worked almost every time. I think I was taking advantage of lag for once. :)

OK this is weird. I was on that quest for 2 days and as people mentioned the guards are somewhat out of phase. Being a hunter I managed to grab one Deathguard from outside but then all seemed to be out of range and my pet wouldnt go and attack. So I ran around Andorhal and when I was at the north entrance and just rode in to look for the spawn points people have mentioned.

And for whatever reasons when I entered from north I was in the proper phase and saw plenty of Deathguards so I killed them as quickly as I could (did not bother to loot) and sure enough, I was out of phase again when I've just killed my 15th Deathguard.

I have no idea if that is reproduceable and thus a helpful comment at all. Just wanted to have mentioned it that I somehow managed to get into the right phase. Wheter it happened because I repeatedly entered and left Andorhal or because I entered Andorhal at an certain angle (hey, you never know) I cant say :(

As a Ret Pally I rode around the perimeter of Andorhal to do this quest as I could not see the Deathgaurds when I was inside the city due to phasing issues. There are about 5 places where you can stand outside of Andorhal and see the correct mobs inside of the city to kill. Just spot them, get on your mount, run to their location as best you can (they will fade out before you can get to them), drop a consecrate, get back on your mount immediately, and dash back outside the Andorhal zone. If you hit him, and it is easy to do, then he will chase you out. This will work from an amazingly long way away. Pretty much, if you can see the Deathguard, you can drop a consecrate in his area and dash back out in time for him to take damage and chase you.

This worked for me. What i did i zoned out of the WPL into the EPL and it allowed it to phase properly. I flew back and i landed and hacked my way to a complete quest. If this works for you your welcome if not sorry i wasted your time.

After I turned in , all of the deathguards phased back in, try that.

As of 4.2, all of the andorhal deathguards are where they should be. Finally, I can finish this quest.

Wowhead'ers rejoice! As of Patch 4.2 Firelands, the quest is now completable. The guards now spawn regularly and do not phase out when entering Andorhal. Now the quest completable!

Did all the quests from the guys in Andorhal today and wasn't offered this one by Lang. I'm disappointed because I wanted the ring for my 39 warrior.

Perhaps I missed a prereq?

The prerequisites for this quest involve a few quest chains.

1. In Andorhal, start with Scourge First... Horde Later and The Endless Flow (you can optionally be lead into these quests via the Hero's Call, a quest and gryphon ride in the Hinterlands, a quest and teleportation in Booty Bay, or just down the road at Chillwind Camp).
2. Follow up with Scholomancer, Brute Strength, and Araj the Summoner.
3. Victory, For Now ends round 1 in Andorhal and leads you to Chillwind Camp.
4. A Mighty Hunger and Go Fletch! are offered at Chillwind Camp (these are available without prerequisites and may be completed at any time prior to the next step).
5. Next comes a quest chain: Uther's Blessing; The Abandoned Crypt; Ambushed!; The Writhing Haunt; This is Our Army; Combat Training.
6. Optionally, you can pick up the quest The Menders' Stead in Chillwind Camp from Argent Officer Pureheart which leads to the Mender's Stead.
7. The quest to return to Andorhal for round 2 is found in the Menders' Stead. Durnt Brightfalcon gives you the quest The Battle Resumes! You may need to gain a level or two before it becomes available.
8. Supporting the Troops as well as Ashes to Ashes should now be available in Andorhal.

I hope this helps any of you wondering about prerequisites.
